UV Light. The Most Reliable and Widely Accepted Approach To Inactivating SARS-COV-2

Why was UV light called the “most reliable and widely accepted approach” to inactivating SARS-COV-2?

Recently, the University of Milano conducted a study on the effectiveness of UV-C light in combating SARS-COV-2. They found that SARS-COV-2 can be transmitted through the air in the form of an aerosol and can survive outside the body for hours. Because of this, it’s imperative that in addition to sanitizing surfaces, we sanitize the air we breathe.

UV-C light has a long history in surface and airborne sanitization. There is plenty of test data supporting its ability to inactive viruses and kill bacteria. In fact, UV-C light has been used in hospitals, clean rooms, schools, retail, manufacturing, and in homes in order to produce a cleaner indoor environment. UV-C technology is easily retrofitted to existing HVAC systems. It doesn’t matter if it’s a roof top unit on a business, a ductless unit mounted to a wall, a regular residential split system, or a wall mount unit on a portable classroom, there are UV solutions for all applications.

What’s important with UV-C light, whatever the application, is that we have the right intensity of the light and enough exposure time to the light in order to inactivate microbes. University of Milan found that the correct UV dosage needed to inactivate the SARS-COV-2 virus is 3.7 mJ/cm2. This is a relatively small dose when compared to what is needed to destroy other microbes like clostridium difficile. When we design the UV-C light properly, we can protect the air that we breathe indoors.
