Regulations have increasingly become stricter from greater consideration for the global environment because of the Montreal Protocol in 1987 and the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, resulting in a shift to refrigerants with even lower environmental impact. R-410A cannot be used in production of new commercial and residential HVAC systems effective January 1, 2024.

In preparation for the January 1, 2024 mandatory refrigerant change, Daikin recently announced the adoption of R-32 to be used in light commercial and residential products in North America. Daikin has been using R-32 worldwide since 2012 and estimates 84 million units already sold in over 70 countries.
